MOVIE'S STORYLINE: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a magical phenomenon unlike anything ever before seen on screen. Borrowing largely from cinema's horror conventions, the film begins as an innocent young couple is stranded at the home of a mad scientist who is building the perfect man. The castle is filled with a most bizarre group of characters who worship their master, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played magnificently by the fabulously sexy Tim Curry, in leather jacket, pearls, fishnet stockings, and heavy makeup. Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to examine their own sexuality as the voluptuous doctor releases the hidden desires in each of them. Based on the stage musical by Richard O'Brien (who also appears in the film as Riff Raff), the film comes alive with unforgettable song-and-dance numbers that have come to represent the sexual liberation of the 1970s. The outstanding costuming and makeup, the terrific acting by a group of relative unknowns (Curry, O'Brien, Bostwick, Sarandon, Nell Campbell, Patricia Quinn, Meat Loaf), and the memorable songs ('Time Warp' & 'Sweet Tranvestite') help make The Rocky Horror Picture Show one of the most bizarrely entertaining and satisfying musicals ever made." - From IMDB.com
THE LIVE SHOW: Since it's 1975 release, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has evolved into a phenomenon. Live casts all over the world perform the movie while it is being shown on a movie screen, even duplicating the costumes, movements, and props. Over the years, audience participation (AP) lines have been created to shout during gaps in dialogue to get laughs, frequently using profanity and sexual themes. People who have never seen a live performance of the movie are known as "virgins" and go through an embarassing, but harmless, de-virginization ritual before the movie starts. At our theatre, a live cast, called "Interchangeable Parts," performs the movie on Saturday nights at 11:50pm. The show is adult-oriented and rated R (no one under 17 admitted without parent or guardian). Parental discretion is strongly advised due to adult themes, vulgar language, sexual situations and simulated sex.
PROP BAGS: Using specific props during Rocky shows is a tradition and it is part of the audience participation that is encouraged. The main props are: rice that is thrown during the wedding scene, toast that is thrown during a dinner toast, party hats and noisemakers that are used along with the Transylvanians in the lab scenes, playing cards "for sorrow" and "pain" as sung in the movie, a newspaper to put on your head with Janet in the rain, and a glove to snap along with Frank in the lab scene. There are a few more, but these props are the ones available in a "prop bag" for you to buy from cast members at the shows (cash only)! If you'd like to know more, go to the cast's website where they list more props: Click here.
